Operation Records Book (RAF Form 540): 6.4.45 - 10Bostons were briefed to attack the Ferry terminals E of Pontelagoscuro.This was done in two raids of five aircraft.(...) Unfortunately one aircraft from the first raid failed to return, the crew being: PILOT - W/O RNG WHITWELL, NAV. - SGT. H.G.LAKE, W/AIR - W/O.J,G, SHEARER,A/G - SGT.J.COWE.

7.4.45 - News came through this evening that Pilot of the aircraft which was missing last night, W/O RNJ WHITWELL, has been picked up after spending twenty four hours in a dinghy. There is no further news of the other members of the crew.

Di ritorno dall’azione su Pontelagoscuro, il Boston ammarò al largo di Porto Garibaldi. Non si conoscono le cause della perdita, che potrebbe essere stata causata da danni subiti dalla flak o da un guasto tecnico. Solamente il pilota Whitwell ebbe la capacità o la fortuna di uscire dall’aereo prima del suo affondamento e, galleggiando sul canotto di salvataggio, arrivò a riva il giorno dopo, in territorio alleato. I corpi degli altri tre aviatori non furono mai ritrovati e sono ricordati al Malta Memorial.
